Biography
Rhapsody of Fire is an Italian power metal band widely recognized as one of the pioneers of the symphonic power metal subgenre, often referred to as “film score metal” due to their epic, theatrical, and orchestral style. The band was formed in 1993 under the name Thundercross, later changed to Rhapsody, and eventually adopted the name Rhapsody of Fire in 2006.
Their debut album, Legendary Tales, released in 1997, is considered a landmark in the development of symphonic cinematic metal. It introduced a powerful fusion of fast-paced power metal, massive orchestration, and an ongoing high-fantasy narrative concept.
Rhapsody of Fire is known for several defining characteristics:
Cinematic orchestration reminiscent of film soundtracks, inspired by composers such as Hans Zimmer and Basil Poledouris
Operatic tenor vocals, particularly during the early era featuring Fabio Lione
Fast and highly technical neoclassical guitar and keyboard work
Poetic and archaic-style English lyrics, sometimes incorporating Latin and Italian
Compositions influenced by opera and baroque music
Their music is deeply cinematic, making each album feel like a fantasy film translated into metal form.
