Album Info / Review

The Historical Weight: Out of the Ashes of Windir
To understand I Krig, one must understand Vreid’s origin. The band was formed by the surviving members of the legendary pitch-black folk metal band Windir after their frontman and mastermind, Valfar (Terje Bakken), tragically died of hypothermia in a blizzard in 2004.

Instead of continuing under the Windir name, bassist Hváll (Jarle Kvåle), drummer Steingrim, and guitarist Sture formed Vreid (which means “Wrath” in their local dialect). While their early work was trying to find a new identity, I Krig was the moment Vreid truly stepped out of Windir’s shadow to forge their own signature genre: “Black ‘n’ Roll.”

The Concept: The Poetry of War
What makes I Krig incredibly unique is its lyrical foundation. Rather than writing typical metal lyrics about violence, Hváll based the entire album on a 1946 collection of poems written by Gunnar Reiss-Andersen, a member of the Norwegian resistance movement during the Nazi occupation of Norway. The music serves as a dark sonic landscape to honor those poems, capturing the grim reality of occupation, sabotage, and survival in the freezing Norwegian mountains.

Musical Style & Characteristics:
Black ‘n’ Roll Production: The album perfectly blends the cold, tremolo-picked atmospheres of traditional Norwegian Second Wave Black Metal with the driving, groovy, and infectious rhythms of classic 1970s rock and thrash metal.

Grim Melodicism: The guitars possess a distinctively melancholic tone. The melodies are beautiful but wrapped in an oppressive, gray blanket of sadness and tension.

Aggressive, Clear Vocals: Sture’s harsh vocals are raspy and cutting, but delivered with a rhythmic cadence that emphasizes the poetic meter of the Norwegian lyrics.

Notable Tracks:
“Jarnbyrd” (Iron Burden)

The opening track sets an intense, marching pace. Driven by a heavy, pulsating bassline and sharp guitar riffs, it perfectly mimics the feeling of an advancing army and the weight of psychological oppression.

“I Krig” (In War)

The title track is a masterpiece of dynamic songwriting. It seamlessly shifts from high-velocity black metal blasting to slower, groove-laden sections that highlight the band’s stellar rock ‘n’ roll sensibilities.

“Under Isen” (Under the Ice)

A deeply atmospheric and chilling track. The melodies evoke the frozen Norwegian winter, building a sense of isolation and claustrophobia that perfectly mirrors the underground resistance fighters hiding in the wilderness.

“Søvnlause Netter” (Sleepless Nights)

A melancholic, mid-tempo song driven by fantastic melodic guitar leads. It captures the psychological torment and dread of war, making it an incredibly emotional highlight of the record.

Critical Reception & Legacy
The Breakthrough: I Krig was a major turning point for Vreid. It received universal acclaim from extreme metal critics who praised its historical depth and artistic maturity. It proved that the band had successfully moved past the tragedy of Windir to build a unique legacy of their own.

A Cultural Document: By using the poetry of Reiss-Andersen, Vreid created an album that transcended the standard tropes of metal music, turning the record into a piece of Norwegian historical storytelling.

Live Staple: To this day, songs from I Krig remain central fixtures in Vreid’s live setlists, embodying the raw energy and patriotic grimness of the Sogndal metal scene.

Album Info / Review

Intro:
The frigid winds of Swedish black metal have long carried tales of frostbitten landscapes and inner turmoil, and Necrophobic, a name synonymous with unwavering aggression and atmospheric bleakness, returns with “Hrimthursum.” This offering, steeped in the guttural growls and razor-sharp riffing that have defined their career, delves deeper into the icy abyss, presenting a collection of tracks that are as punishing as they are evocative. “Hrimthursum” is not a departure; it is a refinement, a sharpening of the blade honed over decades of sonic warfare. The production, while retaining a raw edge, possesses a clarity that allows each instrument to bite with venomous precision, creating a sonic tapestry woven from shadows and ice.

Track Analysis:
“Hrimthursum” opens with the title track, an immediate barrage of blast beats and tremolo-picked fury that sets the tone for the entire album. The guitars churn with a relentless, mid-paced groove that evokes the lumbering gait of an ancient, ice-bound entity. The vocals, a guttural roar, are delivered with a palpable sense of ancient rage, a primal scream against the encroaching darkness. “The Serpent’s Kiss” injects a slightly more melodic, albeit still grim, sensibility. The riffing here has a serpentine quality, slithering through the sonic landscape with a menacing allure. The drumming is a masterclass in controlled chaos, punctuating the riffs with precise fills and thunderous double bass. “The Scythe of Sorrow” showcases Necrophobic’s ability to craft anthemic yet devastating passages. The chorus, if it can be called that, is a guttural chant that lingers long after the track has ended, imbued with a sense of inevitable doom. The guitar solos are not flashy displays but rather jagged shards of dissonance that pierce through the sonic density. “Beneath the Serpent’s Eye” shifts gears, introducing a more brooding, atmospheric section. The guitars take on a sludgier, more oppressive texture, creating a suffocating sense of dread before erupting back into their signature ferocity. The bass guitar, often a hidden weapon in black metal, is surprisingly prominent here, providing a solid, gnawing foundation. “The Obsidian Throne” is a pure, unadulterated assault. The tempo rarely dips, and the riffs are relentlessly aggressive, each chord a hammer blow to the skull. The vocals are at their most ferocious, a torrent of venomous pronouncements. “The Serpent’s Embrace” offers a brief respite in its intro, with a haunting, clean guitar melody that hints at a forgotten ritual, only to be swallowed whole by a crushing wave of distorted aggression. The track builds and recedes, creating a dynamic ebb and flow that keeps the listener on edge. “The Serpent’s Wisdom” closes the album with a sprawling, epic track. It weaves together elements of their signature sound with moments of chilling atmospheric passages. The guitar work here is particularly noteworthy, shifting between icy melodicism and raw, unbridled aggression, culminating in a final, sustained note that fades into the frigid silence.

Conclusion:
“Hrimthursum” is a testament to Necrophobic’s enduring power and their unwavering commitment to their sonic vision. It is an album that demands attention, a visceral experience that plunges the listener into a world of frost, shadow, and primal fury. While it may not reinvent the wheel of Swedish black metal, it polishes it to a terrifying sheen, offering a collection of tracks that are both brutal and compelling. This is an album for those who find solace in the storm, for those who embrace the darkness as a source of strength. Necrophobic has once again delivered a crushing blow, solidifying their position as titans of the genre.

Rating: 9/10

Highlight Track: The Serpent’s Wisdom

Album Info / Review

Intro:
Naglfar, Sweden’s purveyors of sonic frostbite, return with “Sheol,” an album that plunges headfirst into the abyssal depths of the underworld. Emerging from the icy embrace of their homeland, Naglfar has always been synonymous with a potent blend of melodic black metal and raw, unadulterated aggression. “Sheol” continues this tradition, yet it feels like a distillation, a refined and concentrated dose of their signature sound, polished to a wicked sheen. This is not an album for the faint of heart; it’s a meticulously crafted descent into a realm of despair, fury, and a chilling, almost melancholic beauty. The production is crisp, allowing each instrument to breathe while maintaining an oppressive atmosphere, a testament to the band’s evolution and their unwavering commitment to their dark artistry.

Track Analysis:
“The Darkest Road” opens with a discordant shriek of feedback that immediately signals the album’s intent. A furious blast beat propels the listener into a maelstrom of tremolo-picked riffs, each note laced with venom. The vocals, a guttural roar from the abyss, articulate tales of damnation and eternal suffering. The track masterfully navigates shifts in tempo, from breakneck assaults to more brooding, melodic passages that offer brief respites before the storm reclaims its dominance.

“The Serpent’s Kiss” introduces a more overtly melodic sensibility from the outset. The guitars weave intricate patterns, imbued with a sense of tragic grandeur. The drumming here is more nuanced, emphasizing powerful double bass runs and precise cymbal work that accentuates the melodic lines. The track builds to a devastating crescendo, a testament to Naglfar’s ability to craft anthemic yet devastating compositions.

“The Black Dawn” is a relentless onslaught. The riffing is sharp and angular, reminiscent of early Bathory’s raw power, but delivered with a modern, razor-sharp clarity. The bassline churns beneath the surface, a palpable force adding weight and depth to the sonic assault. The vocal performance is particularly ferocious, a primal scream that echoes the album’s themes of existential dread.

“The Unholy Creation” offers a slightly more atmospheric approach. The intro features a chilling, clean guitar melody that slowly gives way to a crushing, mid-paced riff. The keyboards, subtly layered in the background, add an ethereal, almost spectral quality, enhancing the sense of foreboding. The track’s dynamic range is impressive, showcasing Naglfar’s willingness to experiment without sacrificing their core identity.

“The Dying Embers” is perhaps the album’s most introspective moment. A mournful, clean guitar passage opens the track, evoking images of a desolate, windswept landscape. This is quickly shattered by a brutal, mid-tempo riff that carries a profound sense of loss. The solos throughout this track are not mere technical displays but rather emotional outbursts, wailing and screaming their anguish.

“The Shadow’s Embrace” returns to a more aggressive footing. The riffing is complex and interlocking, creating a dense sonic tapestry. The drumming is a relentless barrage, pushing the track forward with unyielding force. The vocals are delivered with a chilling clarity, each word dripping with malice.

“The Obsidian Throne” is a towering, epic track. It’s a slow-burning inferno, characterized by colossal riffs and a suffocating atmosphere. The layered vocals create a sense of a spectral choir, chanting pronouncements of doom. The track’s length allows for a gradual build-up of intensity, culminating in a devastating finale.

“The Eternal Frost” concludes the album with a final, chilling statement. It’s a return to the raw aggression of earlier tracks, but with a mature and refined execution. The guitars are a blizzard of icy melodies and crushing power chords, while the drumming is a relentless, punishing force. The track fades out with a sense of lingering dread, leaving the listener adrift in the desolate landscape of “Sheol.”

Conclusion:
“Sheol” is a triumph for Naglfar. It’s an album that successfully balances raw aggression with sophisticated musicianship and a pervasive atmosphere of darkness. Each track is a meticulously crafted piece of sonic architecture, designed to draw the listener deeper into its bleak and unforgiving world. The band has managed to refine their sound without losing an ounce of their primal power. This is an essential addition to any collection of modern black metal, a testament to Naglfar’s enduring legacy.

Rating: 9.5/10

Album Info / Review

Intro:
The oppressive, tar-like atmosphere of Cor Scorpii’s latest offering, “Ruin,” seeps into the listener’s consciousness with the insidious grace of creeping necrosis. This is not music for the faint of heart or those seeking ephemeral sonic pleasantries. Instead, Cor Scorpii crafts a suffocating tapestry of dread, weaving together elements of traditional doom, funeral doom, and a palpable sense of existential despair. “Ruin” is a descent into the abyss, a meticulously constructed monument to decay and the inevitable entropy that governs all things. From the opening guttural exhalations to the final, echoing silence, the album demands a sustained engagement with its bleak narrative, offering no respite, only a deepening immersion into its desolate soundscape.

Track Analysis:
“The First Scar” immediately plunges the listener into a sluggish, crushing tempo, punctuated by the mournful wail of a distant, distorted guitar. The vocals, a bestial roar steeped in a profound sorrow, act as the tormented narrator of this grim chronicle. The rhythm section is a relentless, tectonic force, each bass note a seismic tremor, each drum hit a hammer blow against bone. “Veins of Ash” introduces a slightly more melodic, albeit still melancholic, guitar line that snakes through the sonic mire, offering fleeting moments of ethereal beauty before being swallowed by the crushing weight of the overall sound. The interplay between the clean, almost spectral backing vocals and the primary guttural delivery creates a chilling duality, a dialogue between the dying and the dead.

“Echoes of the Unseen” is a masterclass in atmospheric dread. The deliberate pacing allows for the subtle nuances of the production to breathe, with cavernous reverb and the occasional, unsettling burst of static adding layers of disquiet. The guitar solo, when it finally emerges, is not a display of technical prowess but a raw, emotive lament, a desperate cry lost in the vastness. “The Great Oblivion” shifts the dynamic slightly, incorporating a more pronounced blast beat for brief, violent surges, like a final, agonizing spasm before succumbing to stillness. The vocal performance here is particularly harrowing, conveying a visceral agony that transcends mere performance.

“Sepulchre of Whispers” is where the funeral doom elements truly dominate. The tempo slows to an almost imperceptible crawl, and the guitar tones become impossibly thick and distorted, evoking the feeling of being buried alive. The sparse use of keys adds an icy, spectral quality, enhancing the sense of profound isolation. The album’s penultimate track, “Beneath the Weight of Stars,” builds upon this foundation, layering dissonant chords and suffocating drones to create a truly suffocating experience. The climactic section, with its layered vocal textures and overwhelming sonic density, feels like the final surrender to an inescapable fate. “Ruin” concludes with the self-titled track, a slow, drawn-out funeral dirge that fades into an unnerving silence, leaving the listener adrift in the aftermath of sonic devastation.

Conclusion:
“Ruin” is not an album to be passively consumed; it is an experience to be endured. Cor Scorpii has crafted a work of immense sonic gravity, a testament to the power of extreme metal to convey the deepest and darkest aspects of the human psyche. The meticulous production, the crushing instrumentation, and the utterly devastating vocal performances combine to create a cohesive and profoundly impactful statement. This is an album that will linger long after the final note has faded, its tendrils of despair wrapping themselves around the listener’s psyche. For those who appreciate the stark beauty of utter desolation and the cathartic release found in confronting the void, “Ruin” is an essential, albeit harrowing, journey.

Rating: 9.5/10

Album Info / Review

Intro:
Cor Scorpii, a name whispered with reverence in the more obscure corners of the black metal cosmos, unleashes “Monument,” a testament to their unwavering dedication to sonic desolation and primal aggression. This isn’t an album for the faint of heart, nor for those seeking polished production or easily digestible melodies. Instead, “Monument” is a meticulously crafted descent into the abyss, a collection of raw, unforgiving tracks that claw at the listener’s psyche with icy tendrils. From the first guttural rasp to the final, echoing decay, Cor Scorpii paints a bleak, monochrome landscape of existential dread and cosmic indifference. The production, while intentionally lo-fi, possesses a palpable weight, allowing the instruments to breathe and exert their full, oppressive force.

Track Analysis:
“The Obsidian Gate” opens the album with a blast of dissonant tremolo picking, immediately plunging the listener into a maelstrom of chaotic energy. The drums are a relentless, tribalistic assault, punctuated by sharp snare hits and cavernous tom fills. The vocals, a venomous shriek, are layered with a subtle, almost ghostly rasp, adding a disquieting depth. “Whispers from the Void” shifts gears, introducing a slithering, almost serpentine riff that crawls under the skin. The tempo slows, allowing the atmosphere to thicken, with sparse, echoing guitar leads that feel like dying stars. The bassline is a subterranean rumble, a constant, unsettling presence. “Chthonic Embrace” is a brutal, mid-paced crusher. The riffs are thick and suffocating, reminiscent of early Morbid Angel, but with a distinctly more frigid, northern European edge. The drumming here is particularly noteworthy, showcasing a brutal efficiency that never falters.

“Echoes of the Forgotten Sun” is an instrumental interlude, a brief respite of chilling ambient textures and mournful, clean guitar arpeggios. It’s a moment of fragile beauty before the storm reclaims its hold. “Serpent’s Coil” erupts with renewed ferocity. The blast beats return with a vengeance, and the guitar work is a furious tapestry of razor-sharp riffs and searing solos that eschew technicality for pure, unadulterated sonic abrasion. “The Unraveling” is the album’s longest track, a sprawling epic that journeys through various sonic landscapes. It begins with a slow, crushing build-up, gradually accelerating into a full-blown assault of black metal fury. The vocals here are particularly varied, shifting from guttural roars to piercing screams, conveying a profound sense of despair. The final track, “Monument,” is a fittingly somber and epic conclusion. It’s a slow, dirge-like piece, dominated by crushing doom-laden riffs and the mournful wail of feedback. The track fades out into silence, leaving the listener with a profound sense of emptiness.

Conclusion:
“Monument” is a triumph of unadulterated black metal. Cor Scorpii has crafted an album that is both deeply personal and cosmically vast, a sonic monument to the enduring power of darkness and despair. The album’s raw, unvarnished production, coupled with its relentless aggression and suffocating atmosphere, makes it a challenging but ultimately rewarding listen. This is an album that demands your full attention, an album that will leave its mark long after the final notes have faded. Cor Scorpii has solidified their position as purveyors of true, uncompromised sonic darkness with this masterful release.

Rating: 9/10

Highlight Track: The Unraveling

Album Info / Review

Intro:
Dark Fortress, a name synonymous with the more cerebral and atmospherically charged corners of German black metal, returns with “Ylem,” a sprawling testament to their evolving sonic architecture. This isn’t a record for the uninitiated seeking immediate, visceral aggression. Instead, “Ylem” demands patience, rewarding the listener with intricate tapestries of sound woven with meticulous precision. The album eschews overt melodicism in favor of a more dissonant and complex harmonic language, pushing the boundaries of what one might expect from a band with such a storied history in the genre. The production is remarkably clear, allowing each layer of instrumentation to breathe and contribute to the overall oppressive, yet strangely beautiful, atmosphere.

Track Analysis:
“Ylem” opens with the eponymous track, a slow-burn of ambient textures and distorted, rumbling basslines. It builds gradually, a creeping dread that culminates in a surprisingly melodic, albeit melancholic, guitar passage before devolving into a tempest of blast beats and searing vocals. “The Serpent’s Embrace” follows, showcasing a more direct, yet still intricate, approach. The guitar riffs are sharp and angular, reminiscent of early Enslaved, but delivered with a venomous bite. The drumming here is particularly noteworthy, a relentless barrage of fills and cymbal work that propels the track forward with an almost frantic energy.

“Echoes of Oblivion” is a significant departure, leaning heavily into atmospheric passages. Clean guitar arpeggios, layered with ethereal synths, create a sense of vast emptiness, punctuated by guttural roars that feel like they emanate from the very core of despair. The interplay between these clean sections and the eventual descent into crushing, distorted chords is masterful. “The Gilded Cage” presents a more traditional black metal structure, but with a sophisticated twist. The tremolo picking is precise, never devolving into aimless chaos, and the black metal vocals are delivered with a chilling clarity, conveying a profound sense of existential angst.

“Veil of Ignorance” is an instrumental interlude, a brief respite that nonetheless carries a heavy emotional weight. It’s a delicate tapestry of acoustic guitar and subtle synth pads, offering a moment of introspection before the album plunges back into its darker machinations. “The Architects of Ruin” is perhaps the most aggressive track on the album, featuring rapid-fire blast beats and a relentless onslaught of dissonant riffs. However, even in its ferocity, there’s a sense of controlled chaos, a calculated aggression that avoids becoming monotonous. The vocal performance on this track is particularly savage, a raw outpouring of rage.

“Where the Sun Never Shines” returns to a more atmospheric and brooding sound. The guitar melodies are haunting and despairing, weaving a narrative of utter desolation. The bassline is thick and resonant, providing a solid foundation for the more ethereal elements. The final track, “The Serpent’s Coil,” acts as a fitting conclusion. It’s a long, epic piece that revisits themes and sonic motifs from earlier tracks, bringing the listener on a journey through the album’s sonic and emotional landscape. It builds to a powerful, cathartic crescendo, leaving the listener drained but undeniably moved.

Conclusion:
“Ylem” is a challenging but ultimately rewarding listen. Dark Fortress has once again demonstrated their mastery of atmospheric black metal, pushing their sound in new and exciting directions. This is an album that demands repeated listens, revealing new depths and intricacies with each immersion. It’s a testament to their artistic growth, a bold statement from a band unafraid to explore the darker, more complex facets of their craft. The album’s cohesive nature and its ability to evoke such a potent emotional response solidify its place as a significant release in their discography.

Rating: 9/10

Album Info / Review

Intro:
Dark Fortress, the German purveyors of atmospheric black metal, have long carved a niche for themselves with their intricate song structures and evocative lyrical themes. “Tales from Eternal Dusk,” their 2001 debut, stands as a foundational pillar in their discography, a raw yet remarkably developed statement of intent. This album is not merely a collection of songs; it’s a descent into a twilight realm, a meticulously crafted soundscape that bleeds melancholy and a profound sense of cosmic dread. From the opening, almost mournful guitar melody, the listener is immediately ensnared in a sonic tapestry woven with frost-kissed riffs, thundering percussion, and the signature, venomous rasp of vocalist Morean. “Tales from Eternal Dusk” is a testament to the band’s early mastery, showcasing a maturity and depth that belied their nascent status.

Track Analysis:
“Intro: The First Light” immediately sets a somber, almost elegiac tone with its clean, arpeggiated guitar work, a stark contrast to the storm that is about to break. This brief, atmospheric prelude serves as a chilling omen. “Tales from Eternal Dusk” explodes with a furious yet melodic blast beat, Morean’s vocals a raw, unbridled torrent of anguish. The guitar leads are sharp and piercing, weaving intricate patterns over a driving rhythm section that rarely falters. The mid-section introduces a more brooding, almost doomy passage, showcasing the band’s dynamic range. “When the Night Falls” continues the relentless assault, but with a more pronounced sense of epic grandeur. The riffs are anthemic, the drumming a thunderous, almost tribal force. The song builds to a crescendo of layered guitars and guttural screams, a true testament to their early songwriting prowess. “The Last Embrace” offers a slight reprieve, featuring a more restrained tempo and a haunting, melancholic clean guitar passage that underscores the album’s pervasive sense of loss. However, this calm is shattered by a blistering, tremolo-picked fury that reclaims the darkness. “Beneath the Crimson Moon” is a masterclass in atmospheric black metal, with its swirling, dissonant guitar harmonies creating a suffocating, claustrophobic atmosphere. Morean’s vocal delivery here is particularly potent, shifting from sneering contempt to desperate wails. The track’s length allows for significant development, with instrumental passages that are both bleak and captivating. “Whispers of the Forgotten” is a more introspective piece, characterized by its intricate, almost progressive guitar work and a more nuanced vocal performance that hints at a deeper narrative. The drumming is precise and impactful, driving the song forward without ever becoming monotonous. “Eternal Dusk” closes the album with a sprawling, epic composition. It’s a journey through shifting moods, from crushing brutality to moments of ethereal beauty. The guitar solos are particularly noteworthy, displaying technicality without sacrificing emotion. The final moments fade out with a sense of unresolved tension, leaving the listener adrift in the lingering darkness.

Conclusion:
“Tales from Eternal Dusk” is a remarkable debut that demonstrates Dark Fortress’s precocious talent for crafting expansive and emotionally resonant black metal. The album’s raw production, while perhaps a point of contention for some, imbues it with a potent sense of authenticity and primal energy. The band seamlessly blends aggression with moments of profound melancholy, creating a sonic landscape that is both punishing and beautiful. This is an album that rewards repeated listens, revealing new layers of complexity and depth with each immersion. It’s a vital entry in the band’s discography and a strong contender for one of the most compelling atmospheric black metal albums of its era.

Rating: 4.5 / 5

Highlight Track: Beneath the Crimson Moon

Album Info / Review

Intro:
The German black metal scene has long been a fertile ground for sonic explorations that push beyond conventional boundaries. Dark Fortress, a name that has consistently carved its own path within this landscape, returns with “Stab Wounds,” an album that feels less like a collection of songs and more like a meticulously crafted descent into a bruised and bleeding psyche. This is not the raw, lo-fi fury of their early years; rather, “Stab Wounds” presents a mature, sophisticated, and deeply unsettling brand of melodic black metal, characterized by intricate songwriting, haunting atmospheres, and a palpable sense of existential dread. The production is polished, allowing every nuance of their complex arrangements to breathe, yet it retains a sharp, biting edge that prevents it from becoming overly pristine.

Track Analysis:
“Stab Wounds” opens with the deceptively calm, almost melancholic instrumental “Stabwound I,” a somber piano melody accompanied by distant, echoing guitar passages. This serves as a chilling prelude, lulling the listener into a false sense of security before the storm breaks with “Stabwound II.” Here, the signature Dark Fortress riffing emerges – a swirling vortex of tremolo-picked guitars that are both aggressive and undeniably melodic. The drumming is a masterclass in controlled chaos, shifting from blast beats to intricate, almost jazzy fills with seamless precision. The vocals of Morean are as potent as ever, a guttural roar that conveys a profound sense of anguish and despair, often layered with cleaner, almost chanted passages that add a theatrical, narrative quality.

“My Spirit Will Go On” immediately plunges into a more mid-tempo groove, the guitars weaving a tapestry of dark harmonies. The chorus is a powerful, anthemic declaration of defiance, yet tinged with a sorrowful resignation. The interplay between the driving rhythm section and the soaring, yet dissonant, guitar leads is a recurring theme, creating a dynamic tension that keeps the listener captivated.

“The Serpent’s Embrace” showcases the band’s ability to build immense atmosphere. Slow, crushing riffs are punctuated by moments of eerie silence and sparse, clean guitar arpeggios. The track builds incrementally, its intensity growing like a gathering storm, culminating in a cathartic, yet ultimately bleak, crescendo. The lyrical themes, exploring betrayal and the insidious nature of corruption, are brought to life through Morean’s visceral delivery.

“The Last of My Kind” is a more straightforward assault, featuring a relentless barrage of blast beats and razor-sharp riffs. However, even in its most aggressive moments, there’s an underlying melodic sensibility that prevents it from becoming monotonous. The solos are not mere displays of technicality; they are emotive expressions, weaving in and out of the main melodic lines, adding layers of complexity and sorrow.

“Foul” introduces a more experimental element, with dissonant chords and unconventional song structures. The track feels deliberately unsettling, its disorienting passages mirroring the lyrical themes of mental decay and societal rot. The instrumental breaks are particularly noteworthy, showcasing the band’s compositional prowess.

“Dethrone” is a sprawling epic, clocking in at over nine minutes. It traverses a vast emotional landscape, from moments of crushing despair to soaring, almost hopeful passages, only to be pulled back into the abyss. The dynamic shifts are expertly handled, with the band masterfully transitioning between brutal aggression and moments of profound introspection. The guitar solos here are particularly inspired, showcasing both technical skill and a deep understanding of melodic phrasing.

The album concludes with the haunting reprise, “Stabwound III,” which echoes the melancholic opening, bringing the narrative full circle. This instrumental outro is filled with a sense of weary acceptance, a final, lingering echo of the pain explored throughout the album.

Conclusion:
“Stab Wounds” is a masterful work of art from Dark Fortress. It is an album that demands repeated listens, revealing new layers of depth and complexity with each engagement. The band has refined their sound, delivering a potent blend of aggression, melody, and atmosphere that is both intellectually stimulating and emotionally resonant. It’s a testament to their enduring creativity and their ability to craft music that is as beautiful as it is brutal. This is not an album for casual listening; it is an experience, a journey into the darker recesses of the human condition.

Rating: 9.5/10

Album Info / Review

Intro:
Dark Fortress, the German titans of atmospheric black metal, return with “Spectres from the Old World,” a sprawling testament to their enduring mastery of the genre. This is not an album for the faint of heart or those seeking immediate gratification. Instead, it demands immersion, a descent into the cobwebbed cathedrals of their sonic architecture. Emerging from the shadows after a six-year hiatus, Dark Fortress has not simply revisited their past glories; they have excavated them, polished them with the grime of ages, and presented them as relics of a forgotten, yet potent, era. The production is a revelation, a rich tapestry of clarity and cavernous depth that allows each instrument to breathe and contribute to the suffocating, yet strangely comforting, atmosphere. The guitars weave intricate patterns of melody and aggression, the drums pound with a primal force, and the vocals are a chilling invocation.

Track Analysis:
“Spectres from the Old World” opens with “A Midnight Poem,” a deliberate and atmospheric prelude. It eschews immediate blast beats for a creeping, synth-laden dread that slowly builds into a dissonant guitar riff, hinting at the tempest to come. The title track, “Spectres from the Old World,” is an immediate assertion of dominance. Its galloping rhythm section, punctuated by sharp, tremolo-picked riffs, is classic Dark Fortress, yet imbued with a newfound maturity. The vocals of Morean are a highlight here, shifting from guttural roars to haunting clean passages with an unsettling fluidity. “The Serpent and the Dawn” showcases the band’s knack for dynamic shifts. It begins with a slow, crushing doom-laden passage, only to erupt into a furious barrage of black metal fury, complete with intricate guitar solos that eschew shredding for emotive, melodic expression. “Ghost of the Past” is a more introspective piece, characterized by melancholic clean guitar arpeggios and subtle atmospheric keyboards that evoke a sense of profound loss. The transition back to heavier sections is masterfully executed, creating a palpable emotional arc. “The Serpent’s Kiss” is a relentless onslaught, driven by an unyielding blast beat and razor-sharp riffs that cut through the sonic fog. The interplay between the rhythm and lead guitars is particularly noteworthy, creating a complex and engaging sonic landscape. “When the Raven Calls” leans heavily into the atmospheric elements, with layered keyboards and echoing vocals creating a sense of vast, desolate spaces. The song’s structure is less conventional, favoring a more organic, evolving flow that draws the listener deeper into its spectral embrace. “A Faint Light from the East” is a mid-album epic, a journey through varied sonic textures. It features moments of brutal aggression juxtaposed with passages of haunting beauty, demonstrating the band’s compositional prowess. The clean vocals here are particularly poignant, adding a layer of vulnerability to the otherwise formidable soundscape. “The Last Lantern” is a crushing, almost doomy affair, with thick, distorted riffs that feel like they are being dragged from the depths of the earth. The drumming is particularly impactful, providing a solid, driving foundation. “When the Black Moon Rises” is a return to more traditional black metal territory, but with the signature Dark Fortress polish. The riffs are sharp and aggressive, the blast beats are relentless, and the vocals are pure venom. The album closes with “The End of All Things,” a sprawling, multi-faceted track that acts as a summation of the album’s themes and sonic explorations. It incorporates elements from throughout the record, building to a cathartic, yet ultimately somber, conclusion.

Conclusion:
“Spectres from the Old World” is not merely an album; it is an experience. Dark Fortress has crafted a monumental work that stands as a pinnacle of modern atmospheric black metal. It is a journey through darkness, despair, and ultimately, a strange form of catharsis. The meticulous songwriting, the masterful performances, and the pristine production combine to create an album that is both challenging and immensely rewarding. This is a record that will be dissected, revered, and returned to time and time again by those who appreciate the art of crafting expansive and evocative soundscapes.

Album Info / Review

Intro:
Dark Fortress, Germany’s purveyors of atmospheric black metal, return with “Séance,” their seventh full-length offering. Emerging from the shadows of the German black metal scene, the band has consistently refined their sound, weaving intricate melodies and a palpable sense of dread into their aggressive sonic tapestries. “Séance” arrives with a weight of expectation, promising a descent into the occult and the spectral, a thematic exploration that has been a cornerstone of their artistry. The album is a meticulously crafted journey, eschewing raw aggression for a more nuanced and haunting approach, building upon the foundations laid by their previous works while venturing into new, darker territories.

Track Analysis:
“Séance” opens with “Apotheosis,” a brooding instrumental that immediately sets a somber, almost funereal tone. Shimmering clean guitars weave a melancholic tapestry over a bed of subtle, rumbling percussion, hinting at the atmospheric depths to come. The title track, “Séance,” erupts with a chilling blast beat and venomous, yet surprisingly articulate, vocals from Morean. The riffing here is sharp and incisive, punctuated by moments of soaring melody that prevent the track from becoming monotonous. The keyboards, often a controversial element in black metal, are used with masterful restraint, adding layers of ethereal texture and enhancing the sense of spectral presence rather than overpowering the guitars. “The Gallows Tree” shifts gears, introducing a more mid-paced, almost doom-laden feel. The guitar work here is particularly noteworthy, with dissonant chords and a sense of foreboding that hangs heavy in the air. The vocal delivery transitions between guttural roars and cleaner, almost spoken-word passages, adding a theatrical dimension to the narrative.

“Statues in the Mist” is a masterclass in atmospheric black metal. The guitars are layered with reverb and delay, creating a vast, echoing soundscape. The drumming is precise and dynamic, driving the track forward without sacrificing its eerie ambiance. The melodic sensibilities are on full display, with memorable guitar leads that are both haunting and beautiful. “Woven” showcases the band’s ability to craft longer, more complex compositions. The track ebbs and flows, moving from moments of intense aggression to passages of serene, almost post-rock-esque introspection. The interplay between the guitars and keyboards is particularly striking, with each element complementing the other to create a rich and immersive sonic experience.

“The Shadowed Road” returns to a more aggressive footing, with sharp, tremolo-picked riffs and blast beats that recall the band’s earlier works. However, even in its ferocity, there’s an underlying melodic current that prevents it from devolving into chaos. Morean’s vocals are particularly potent here, conveying a sense of desperation and anguish. “Everlasting” is a slower, more introspective track, built around a haunting clean guitar melody. The keyboards provide a subtle, otherworldly backdrop, and the overall effect is one of profound melancholy and reflection. The album concludes with “The Void,” a sprawling, epic track that brings together many of the album’s sonic elements. It’s a fittingly grand finale, leaving the listener with a sense of lingering unease and a desire to revisit the spectral realms explored within.

Conclusion:
“Séance” is a triumph of atmospheric black metal. Dark Fortress has managed to create an album that is both challenging and accessible, balancing raw aggression with moments of profound beauty and introspection. The production is immaculate, allowing each instrument to breathe and contribute to the overall sonic tapestry. The thematic coherence is strong, drawing the listener into a world of occult rituals and spectral visitations. While some may find the keyboard elements an acquired taste, they are expertly integrated here, adding depth and character without ever becoming obtrusive. “Séance” is not an album that reveals all its secrets on the first listen; it demands attention and rewards repeated engagement. It solidifies Dark Fortress’s position as one of the most vital and innovative bands in modern black metal.

Rating: 9/10

Highlight Track: Statues in the Mist
