The Journey of the Pitch Black Brigade
Rising from Tragedy (2004)
The story of Vreid is deeply intertwined with the legacy of Windir, an iconic blackened folk metal band. In early 2004, Windir's founder and frontman, Valfar (Terje Bakken), tragically perished in a sudden blizzard. Devastated but determined to keep creating music, the surviving members—bassist Hváll, drummer Steingrim, and guitarist Sture—decided to close the chapter on Windir out of respect. They formed a brand new musical entity called Vreid, recruiting Sture to take over lead vocal duties.

Establishing the "Black 'n' Roll" Sound (2004–2009)
Vreid completely shed Windir's folklore elements to carve out a gritty, stripped-down identity. Their early albums, Kraft (2004) and Pitch Black Brigade (2006), traded symphonic keyboard layers for heavy, mid-tempo rock grooves layered with traditional Norwegian black metal rasping.

They achieved a massive artistic breakthrough with I Krig (2007), a critically acclaimed concept album based on World War II-era resistance poetry. This historical focus continued with Milorg (2009), named after the Norwegian WWII resistance movement, cementing their reputation for intelligent, historically grounded songwriting.
The Return of Strom and Continued Evolution (2010–2019)
In 2010, guitarist Strom (another former Windir member) joined Vreid, uniting almost the entire core of their original musical family. Albums like V (2011), Welcome Farewell (2013), and Sólverv (2015) saw the band push deeper into atmospheric, progressive song structures while keeping their signature driving rock rhythm intact.

Cinematic Mastery: Wild North West (2021–Present)
Vreid pushed creative boundaries even further with their 2021 release, Wild North West. Rather than just launching a standard record, they produced a full-length companion concept movie to match the album's dark narrative. It follows a fictional, sanity-warping journey through the majestic and terrifying mountains of Norway, earning praise as one of the most ambitious multi-media projects in modern extreme metal.

The Core "Vreid" Pillars
The Bass Engine: Because Hváll is the primary songwriter, the bass guitar is unusually prominent in the mix, driving the songs forward with infectious, foot-tapping rock lines.

Historical Authenticity: Instead of singing about mythological fantasy, Vreid explores real, stark human struggles, particularly the grim reality of occupation, sabotage, and survival during wartime.

The Sognametal Spirit: Alongside bands like Cor Scorpii, Vreid proudly carries the banner for the unique melodic style born in the Sognefjord region of Norway.
